I absolutely LOVE at home lifestyle sessions. It is the perfect way to showcase your new family member in the comfort of your own home amongst the chaos of newborn life. Babies change so much in the first few weeks which is why it is best to plan ahead and schedule these sessions between week 1 and week 2 following birth. This is when babies are the most sleepy and cooperative (for the most part).

What time of day is best?

The best time to plan for these types of sessions for indoor newborn sessions are between 9am-1pm allowing for the most natural light and the happiest babies. I realize with larger families, this time might not always be best so I am flexible with that time frame.

After booking a date for your session, I always suggest keeping an eye on the lighting in your home throughout the day.

If the natural light isn't sufficient enough or you just don't feel you have the right space, lets chat. I have a few locations I love to shoot at that offer beautiful lighting and aesthetics (rental fees do apply).

How long are these sessions?

This completely depends on baby. We are in no rush with this as we plan for feeding breaks, changing breaks, and whatever else needs to take place during our time together. On average, sessions can be anywhere from 2-3 hours. This seems like a lot but between breaks, it is sufficient time to get all the shots needed. I am a candid storyteller and prioritize shooting this way as it provides for natural posing and focuses on the interaction between you all. Don't stress and just love on your babes!

Preparing the home

The first few weeks of newborn life are CRAZY, enough said. So please do not worry if the house isn't perfect because I completely understand the sleep deprivation and lack of upkeep. To start, think of what areas you would like photographed with cleanish backgrounds. Then, try to declutter areas that may be distracting.

Keep in mind, I will not be taking photos in every room. I will be looking for areas with the most light and largest amount of space. Most common areas photographed are living rooms, nurseries, and master bedrooms. When using the master bedroom for photos, having light and cream colored bedding is preferred.

Temperature: Babies like a warm environment so it is important to keep the home at a comfortable and warm temperature so that they stay happy and sleepy. My suggestion is between 75-80 degrees.

Preparing the family...

For the dads: You will be happy to know that I will only need an hour or so of your time total, breaks here and there. If you have other children then Dad will spend a good portion of time keeping kids entertained before and after their turn.

For families with siblings: prepare them by saying someone fun is coming over and take a few pictures. And I am not above bribing to get kids to cooperate. The idea is not to stress everyone out as that makes for grumpy kids and grumpy parents. Motivate them by a treat at the end of the session when I leave.

Mom: give yourself an extra hour to get ready. I’m not kidding. I want you to take your time and have time to feed the baby as you get ready.

Baby: make sure babies have a full belly when I arrive and a clean diaper.

FEEDING + BREAKS

If at all possible, try and keep baby awake and stimulated an hour before our session – it’s important for baby to be tired when the session starts if possible so they are nice happy campers. Upon my arrival is the best time for feeding and diaper change.

Much of the time during the session will be spent keeping baby in chill mode, moving to new positions and taking the inevitable break because baby is hungry or has a dirty diaper. I like to work as a team with the parents to keep baby happy and safe.

What to Wear...

For in home sessions, the best rule of thumb is to stick to neutrals. That is to wear solid colors and avoid neons or over the top patterns and logos and lean more towards warm earthy and rich tones. I always suggest starting with mom and building from there. Wear something comfortable but flowy so that you are not feeling constricted in the postpartum phase of life. Having a light sweater or cardigan works great.
